I have a student loan (from the government) which I’m trying to pay off as soon as possible. If my minimum payments are $100/month and If I pay double each month, am I prepaying each month or do the excess funds go towards the principal and I liquidate the loan twice as quick?

I’m not actually done with school yet. I had to take time off due to health reasons (I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and was just doing very poorly). I’m going back this fall, hopefully. I’ve been getting bills. At the moment, I don’t make enough to make loan payments. My income is barely enough to pay my rent and utilities. They sent me a forbearance request form so I’m going to fill it out and mail it back. Do I need to send any additional paperwork or should I just send it in and see what happens? Are they picky about granting forbearances? This is a government loan, if that makes any difference. This is causing me great anxiety so any answers would be appreciated.

someone told me i’d have to look into private loans because the the stafford loans wouldn’t cover all of this.

also, does it allow you to take out loans each semester? or when you apply is that for the whole year?

I was on that link and i was so confused… the only form iv ever filled out was the 1040EZ. If you need to IM me or email me for more info that would be helpful, i cant afford to have someone do my taxes for me..also my AGI was 14,000 +.

I have plenty of extra money left over every month after paying bills therefore I would like to pay the interest on the loan while I’m going to school.. how do I get that set up? I don’t want to get charged interest on top of interest over a 4-6 year period. Can anyone give me some information on how to go about getting this set up? Thanks in advance!
