What happens to excess payments made on a student loan?

Saturday, July 24th, 2010
Thoughts asked:

I have a student loan (from the government) which I’m trying to pay off as soon as possible. If my minimum payments are $100/month and If I pay double each month, am I prepaying each month or do the excess funds go towards the principal and I liquidate the loan twice as quick?

What kind of documentation would I need to request a forbearance on my student loan?

Saturday, July 17th, 2010
Diana asked:

I’m not actually done with school yet. I had to take time off due to health reasons (I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and was just doing very poorly). I’m going back this fall, hopefully. I’ve been getting bills. At the moment, I don’t make enough to make loan payments. My income is barely enough to pay my rent and utilities. They sent me a forbearance request form so I’m going to fill it out and mail it back. Do I need to send any additional paperwork or should I just send it in and see what happens? Are they picky about granting forbearances? This is a government loan, if that makes any difference. This is causing me great anxiety so any answers would be appreciated.

filled out fafsa: will government loans cover my tuition?

Monday, July 12th, 2010
Jessica asked:

my efc was 1820, i’m an independent student living with my parents:

i filled out my fafsa pretty late so i don’t know that i will get any financial aid from my school this year. i have to pay 8000 dollars this semester. do government loans usually cover that much need?

someone told me i’d have to look into private loans because the the stafford loans wouldn’t cover all of this.

also, does it allow you to take out loans each semester? or when you apply is that for the whole year?
thanks!

Of the three loans the government offers, federal perkins loan, subsidized stafford loan, and unsubsidized stafford loan, which one is the best to take out and the worst? I don’t want to be too in debt after graduation.

Thanks
